„Timişoara is reviving the Romanian musical tradition.”
prof. univ. Ionel Voineag, Univ. de Muzică, Bucureşti„The seriousness with which, even from the first edition in 1997, the selection of the best voices was made, selection that lead to immediate exposure on the national and international scene, as was the case of Aura Twarowska, Cecilia Costea, Nicoleta Colceiar, Gheorghe Petean, Daniel Trăilă, Cristina Simionescu, gave a good sense of confidence and it attracted many valuable participants in want of a trophy in Timişoara.”
Ioan Tomi, musicologist„It is a tough competition; the participants must be physically and psychologically very fit. I think of this competition as a very serious and professional one. I am glad to it is centered on the creation of such an exceptional mind.”
Prof. univ. Vasile Spătărelu, Univ. de Arte Iaşi -
Sabin V. Drăgoi (1894-1968) awas a composer and folklorist. He did his studies in Iaşi, Cluj and Prague. He was first and foremost a great folklorist, collecting traditional Romanian songs such as the ones published under the titles "303 colinde cu text şi melodie", "360 melodii din Arad şi Hunedoara".
Sabin Drăgoi is one of the fathers of the Romanian Music School based on traditional folklore, being also the author of more than 100 pieces of music in many different genres. In the view of Prof. Gheorghe Firca, musicologist, Sabin V. Drăgoi, is a great personality of Romanian music, being the one who was closes to his source of inspiration: folklore. To achieve this, as Bela Bartok did, he became he scientist also, dedicating time and effort to collecting and studying the antonyms art of the peasant.
He immediately saw the resources in the rhythm and melodicity in folklore, and through his own creation he made away with all doubt persisting in relation to the idea that folklore can stand in its own right as a base for serious compositions (such as Divertisment rustic).
In 1928 he was awarded the Fist Prize for Composition, "G. Enescu", for the piece Divertismentul rustic, which would become the one to consecrate him as a symphonic piece composer. He didicates himself to choir music, much to the delight of the people in Banat region.
The tradition of the choir in Banat, from which the two Masses sprung out, one for a male choir and one for a mixt one, is sustained by his talend to a professional level that marked the coming of age in Romanian composing. Leader also in the opera genre he composed Năpasta, after the work by I. L. Caragiale, in which he deals with everyday life in a village.
It had a triumphant opening in 1928 in Bucharest, and a very warm welcome in the Banat region.
"Cântarea" is the best represented element of his musical composition, be it an attribute of the choir, a piano accompanied piece or an opera aria. The Vocals is a royal way into the creation of Sabin V. Drăgoi.
The Canto competition in Timisoara, already international at its 3rd edition, which is named after the composer is both significant and meaningful and is made know through the voices of the young contestants.
In his career he was:
Harmony, counterpoint and composition Professor (1924-1942)at the Timişoara Conservatory
Director of choirs Doina and Banatul from Timişoara (1924-1932)
